Parents… let’s talk about something that can be exhausting for both you and your child.
You tell them something one minute… and the next minute they’re already doing something completely different.
They move before they think.
They interrupt.
They forget directions.
They rush.
They grab things without asking.
They get corrected all day long.
And after a while?
They start feeling like the “bad kid.”
But here’s what I want you to understand:
Your child is not trying to make life hard for you.
Many impulsive children simply haven’t learned how to slow themselves down yet.
That’s a skill.
And skills can be taught.
The Problem Isn’t Always Defiance
A lot of children who struggle with focus, impulsive behavior, or emotional regulation are moving faster than their thinking.
Their brain is racing ahead of their body.
So what happens?
They jump up before directions are finished
They rush through tasks
They forget steps
They make quick decisions without thinking
They constantly need redirection
And eventually, all that correction starts hurting their confidence.
That’s why we have to move from just correcting behavior… to coaching behavior.
The Strategy: “Slow Down. Stop. Observe. Think. Proceed.”
One of the most powerful strategies I teach children is this simple process:
Slow Down
Stop
Observe
Think
Proceed
This gives children a framework to follow instead of just reacting automatically.
Here’s what each step means:
Slow Down
Before doing anything, pause the body.
Stop
Don’t move forward yet.
Observe
Look around. What’s happening? What are the expectations?
Think
Ask:
Should I ask permission first?
What was I supposed to do?
Is this the best choice?
Proceed
Now move forward with intention.
This process helps children build:
Self-control
Self-awareness
Better decision-making
Confidence
Independence
Don’t Quit During the Resistance Phase
This part is important.
When you first start coaching your child differently, they may become emotional or frustrated.
Why?
Because they’re used to feeling corrected all the time already.
So when you start slowing them down, they may think:
“I’m doing everything wrong again.”
That doesn’t mean the strategy isn’t working.
It means growth is happening.
Stay consistent.
Keep coaching with love.
Keep reminding them:
“We’re learning.”
“I’m teaching you.”
“You’ve got this.”
Another Powerful Tool: Writing Things Down
One strategy Sharita shared was having her daughter write down goals and daily reminders.
This helps children:
Organize thoughts
Slow their thinking
Increase awareness
Remember directions
Build independence
For children who forget multi-step directions, try this:
Give ONE step at a time
Have them write it down
Let them read it back
Add the next step
This builds executive functioning skills while also improving reading and writing confidence.
Your Child Can Grow
If your child struggles with focus, behavior, emotional regulation, reading, or confidence… please hear this:
Growth is possible.
Children can learn:
Better focus
Self-control
Reading skills
Emotional regulation
Confidence
Responsibility
But they need consistent coaching, structure, encouragement, and belief.
Not shame.
Not labels.
Not giving up.
Final Encouragement for Parents
Parenting a struggling learner can feel overwhelming sometimes.
But you are not failing.
Your child is not broken.
They are learning.
And with the right strategies, support, and consistency, amazing growth can happen.
One small step at a time.
