“But if I don’t help… how will they learn?”
That’s the exact question most parents have—and it makes sense.
But here’s the truth:
Sometimes the way we help is actually holding our children back.
Let’s talk about what’s really going on—and what to do instead.
🚨 The Real Problem Isn’t Homework
There’s a big debate right now about whether homework even matters.
Some say:
“Homework has no benefit for elementary students.”
But here’s what I see after 20+ years working with children:
The issue isn’t the homework…
👉 It’s that many kids can’t do it independently.
So what happens?
They avoid it
They procrastinate
They pile up missing assignments
Their confidence drops
Their grades suffer
And then it feels easier to just say:
“Let’s get rid of homework.”
But instead of removing the challenge…
👉 We need to build the skills.
🧠 What Independence REALLY Looks Like
When I say your child should work independently, I don’t mean:
❌ Getting every answer right
❌ Never asking for help
I mean:
✔️ They can read the directions
✔️ They can attempt the work
✔️ They can think through problems
✔️ They can stay engaged—even when unsure
That’s real learning.
❌ The Mistake Most Parents Make
Here’s what usually happens at home:
Child sits down
Parent sits right next to them
Child asks for help before even trying
Parent explains every step
Parent corrects everything in real-time
It feels helpful…
But what it actually does is:
👉 Creates dependency
👉 Shuts down thinking
👉 Builds passivity
Your child starts to believe:
“I can’t do this without my parent.”
✅ What To Do Instead (This Changes Everything)
Step 1: Let Them Do It FIRST
Before you help…
👉 They must attempt the work on their own
Even if it’s messy
Even if it’s wrong
That’s where learning begins.
Step 2: Focus on READING First
If your child struggles…
👉 The first assignment is reading.
Have them read:
The directions
The questions
The full page
Out loud.
Because if they can’t read it…
They can’t do it independently.

Step 3: Step AWAY
This is the hard one, mom 💛
👉 Don’t sit next to them the whole time
Give them space to:
Think
Focus
Try
Because when you’re always there…
They wait for you instead of working.
Step 4: Review AFTER (Not During)
Once they finish:
Now you step in.
Ask:
“How did you get that answer?”
“What was your thinking?”
“Why did you do it that way?”
This is where the real growth happens.
Step 5: Let Them Fix It
If it’s wrong?
👉 Don’t fix it for them.
Have them:
Understand the mistake
Try again
That’s how confidence is built.
💡 What Happens When You Do This Consistently
You’ll start to see:
✨ More confidence
✨ Better focus
✨ Stronger reading skills
✨ Less resistance to homework
✨ More independence at school
And most importantly…
👉 Your child starts believing: “I CAN do this.”
❤️ Final Encouragement
Your child is more capable than you think.
But they need the opportunity to:
Struggle a little
Think deeply
Try on their own
That’s how growth happens.
