Recently, I sat down with Maya to go through the news together. We came across a tornado warning for our area, and it turned into a valuable teaching moment. We not only discussed why it’s essential to pay attention to weather alerts and how to stay safe during emergencies, but we also focused on how to read and understand the information being presented. As a mom, I couldn’t help but hope that everyone who received that warning is okay and safe! Moments like these remind me how crucial it is for our kids to stay engaged and aware of what’s happening in their environment, whether it’s local weather alerts or significant international events.

I often talk to Jazzy about current events, one of them being politics, because I know that soon enough, she’ll be stepping into a voting booth, making decisions that will shape her future. It’s so important to ask our teens what they think about these topics, as it empowers them to think critically, develop their own beliefs, and understand the impact of global and local policies. And at the core of these discussions is the ability to read and comprehend complex ideas.
