As parents, we all want our children to succeed.
We want them to earn good grades, build confidence, develop strong character, and achieve their goals. But one important skill that often gets overlooked is the ability to keep going when things get hard.
The third thing we need to do to change the game in our classrooms is teach our children how to work harder and go the extra mile.
Unfortunately, many children have never been taught that effort matters.
When work becomes difficult, they stop.
When they get frustrated, they quit.
When they make a mistake, they give up.
But success in school—and in life—isn't about being perfect. It's about learning how to keep going when challenges show up.
Effort Is a Skill That Must Be Taught
Many children believe that if something feels difficult, it means they're not good at it.
That's simply not true.
Learning is supposed to be challenging at times. Struggle is often a sign that growth is happening.
As parents, we can help our children understand that success doesn't come from avoiding hard things. Success comes from learning how to work through them.
Instead of saying:
❌ "I can't do it."
Let's teach them to say:
✅ "I can't do it yet."
That one small word can make a huge difference.
Teach Children to Go the Extra Mile
Working harder doesn't mean working endlessly.
It means developing habits that help children produce their best work and continue growing.
Teach your child to:
✨ Keep going when something is challenging.
✨ Check their work before turning it in.
✨ Complete assignments thoroughly.
✨ Practice skills consistently.
✨ Take pride in doing their best.
✨ Push through discomfort instead of avoiding it.
These habits build confidence because children begin to see what they're capable of accomplishing when they don't give up.
Children Are Capable of More Than They Realize
One of the biggest mistakes adults make is assuming children need less challenge.
Sometimes children don't need easier work.
Sometimes they need encouragement.
Sometimes they need support.
Sometimes they need coaching.
Sometimes they simply need someone to believe in them long enough for them to believe in themselves.
I've worked with countless students who thought they couldn't do something—until they learned how to keep trying.
The confidence came after the effort.
The success came after the struggle.
The growth came after they pushed through.
A Quick Review of This Series
So far, we've discussed three ways parents can help change the game in our classrooms:
1. Teach Children to Respect Teachers and Authority
Children learn better when they respect the adults guiding them and understand the importance of listening, cooperating, and following directions.
2. Teach Children to Master Routines and Transitions
Success often comes from simple habits like being prepared, following routines, and anticipating what comes next.
3. Teach Children How to Work Harder and Go the Extra Mile
Children need to learn that effort matters. They need opportunities to practice perseverance, resilience, and determination.
Let's Raise Children Who Keep Going
The world doesn't need more children who quit when things get difficult.
The world needs children who know how to keep going.
Children who learn from mistakes.
Children who embrace challenges.
Children who take pride in their effort.
Children who understand that growth takes time.
Let's teach our children that hard work is not something to fear.
It's a skill that opens doors.
And when children learn how to work hard, stay focused, and keep moving forward, there's no limit to what they can achieve.
Final Encouragement
Your child is capable of more than they realize.
Keep encouraging them.
Keep coaching them.
Keep believing in them.
And most importantly, teach them that success isn't about never struggling—it's about never giving up.
