Effective Home Remedies to Keep Your Family Healthy This Winter Season
By Sharita | Growth Coach, Behavior & Learning Strategist, Math & Literacy Tutor
Hi, family! As we dive into sickness season and snowy days, I wanted to share some of my favorite home remedies that have been lifesavers for my family. These simple, natural tricks are not only effective but easy to incorporate into your daily routine. If you have your own go-to remedies, please feel free to share them—I always love hearing about new ideas!
1. Onions for Congestion Relief
It might sound unusual, but onions are a natural powerhouse when it comes to clearing up congestion! Whenever anyone in my family feels congested, we cut onions and place them around the house. The compounds in onions help clear stuffy noses and soothe coughs, making it easier to breathe. A funny memory I have is slicing onions and putting them inside Mya’s socks—Jazzy couldn’t run out of the room fast enough! Yes, the house might smell like a stir-fry for a bit, but it’s definitely worth it!
2. Green Tea with Immune-Boosting Ingredients
When we’re under the weather, nothing beats a warm cup of green tea packed with immune-boosting ingredients. Here’s my go-to recipe:
• Fresh ginger
• Cloves
• Honey
• Cinnamon
Not only is this tea soothing and comforting, but the combination of ingredients also helps strengthen the immune system—perfect for fighting off those pesky seasonal colds! Plus, it’s a cozy drink to enjoy while watching the snow fall outside.
3. Essential Oil Diffusers for a Calming Atmosphere
Essential oil diffusers are a must in our home, especially during the winter months. We use eucalyptus, peppermint, thyme, lemon, and lavender oils to clear the air, relax our minds, and make our home smell amazing. The calming atmosphere is a game-changer, particularly when we’re stuck indoors. It also helps relieve some cold symptoms by purifying the air and creating a soothing environment. If you haven’t tried essential oils yet, I highly recommend giving them a go this winter.
4. Spicy Foods for Sinus Relief
Here’s a fun one: spicy foods! When we’re feeling stuffy, we love to whip up a spicy meal—think African or Jamaican dishes with habanero or scotch bonnet peppers. The heat from the peppers gets our noses running, providing instant sinus relief. It’s always a good laugh and a quick fix!
Wrapping It Up: Stay Healthy & Cozy This Winter!
These home remedies have become our go-to traditions, especially when the snow is falling and we’re gathered indoors. I hope these ideas inspire you to try something new or add a little extra comfort to your home this season. From onions to spicy foods, there’s no shortage of ways to stay healthy and warm when sickness season hits.
Stay warm, stay healthy, and enjoy the snow!
Warm wishes,
Sharita
